Project details
Timelon is a Pomodoro timer for the desktop, on macOS, Windows and Linux, built by Axar7 as its own product and soon to be open source. It runs focus sessions, short breaks and long breaks on a cycle you set, keeps the countdown in the menu bar, tells you with a notification and a sound of your choosing when a session ends, and records every session so the week, month and year can be read back.
A timer that stays out of the way
Most of the time Timelon is not a window at all. The countdown sits in the menu bar, either as a thin icon beside the time or as a solid pill with the icon and the time cut out of it, and a size setting scales it to suit the screen. The window is there for when you want it: one ring with the time and the session name inside it, and Reset, Start and Skip beneath.
Sessions on your terms
Focus, short break and long break each have their own length, and you choose how many focus sessions come before a long break. Breaks and focus sessions can start by themselves, and Timelon can launch at login. When a session ends, a notification says what finished and what comes next, such as "Long Break finished. Starting Focus.", and an alert plays: one of twelve sounds, from Chime and Kalimba to Singing Bowl, at the volume you set, with a preview in settings.
Made to be looked at
The timer sits on one of six backgrounds, from a quiet Minimal to Aurora, Orbs, Silk, Plasma and Waves, and arrows either side of the ring switch between them. Six colour schemes and a system, light or dark theme cover the rest of the app.
What the time added up to
Stats read the record back by week, month or year. Totals for focus, breaks and long breaks sit beside the number of sessions and breaks and the current day streak; a ring splits the time between the three, a stacked chart shows the time per day, and a curve follows focus sessions across the period, each with the exact figures for a day on hover.
Built with Tauri on a MERN stack
Timelon is a Tauri app: a React interface in Tauri's native desktop shell, which gives it the menu bar presence, notifications and launch at login a desktop app is expected to have. Node.js, Express and MongoDB complete the MERN stack behind it, keeping an optional backup of the stats.
Key features
- Menu bar countdown — thin icon and time, or a solid pill, with adjustable size
- Focus, short break and long break lengths, and sessions per long break
- Auto-start for breaks and focus, and launch at login
- Notifications when a session ends, with twelve alert sounds and a volume control
- Six timer backgrounds, six colour schemes, and system, light or dark themes
- Stats by week, month and year — totals, day streak, time split, time per day and focus sessions
- Runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, with an optional backup of the stats
Design
The window keeps to three places in a left-hand sidebar: Timer, Stats and Settings. The timer screen is a ring that fills as the session runs, the time and the session name inside it, and three controls over the chosen background (Start turns to Pause once a session is running), with the background's name set small at the foot; settings are grouped into Durations, Automation, Appearance, Menu bar and Sound, each choice previewed where it is made.
