Figma plugin development

Axar7 builds Figma plugins and publishes its own: QuickCraft, an all-in-one content generator plugin for Figma with more than 15,000 downloads on Figma Community. A plugin is two programs that talk by message, an interface in an iframe and code that can change the document, and we design and build both.

01How it works

Figma plugin development, step by step

  1. 01

    A frame waiting for content

Plugins exist to take repetitive work out of design. QuickCraft starts from a common case: a frame laid out with empty slots for an avatar, a name, an image, copy and a button, waiting for content.

  2. 02

    The plugin's interface

The plugin opens in its own panel, an iframe with its own interface, where the designer says what they want and presses Generate. This half handles the interface; it cannot change the Figma document itself.

  3. 03

The main thread builds the layers

The request crosses by message to the plugin's main thread, the only part with access to the document. It creates each layer in turn, and the Layers panel grows as the frame fills: avatar, name, image, copy, button.

  4. 04

    Published on Figma Community

QuickCraft is published on Figma Community, where designers find and install plugins. The listing, packaging and updates are part of building a plugin people use.

02Scope

What we build

  • A plugin interface designed for Figma's panel
  • Main-thread code that reads and changes the document
  • Messaging between the interface and the main thread
  • Content generation inside Figma frames, as in QuickCraft
  • Figma Community listing and publishing

04AI

Where AI fits

QuickCraft uses the OpenAI SDK to generate mockup text for Figma designs.

06Questions

Common questions

Have you published a Figma plugin yourselves?

Yes. QuickCraft, an all-in-one content generator plugin for Figma, is ours and is published on Figma Community.

Why does a Figma plugin have two parts?

Figma runs a plugin's interface in an iframe and its document code on a separate main thread. Only the main thread can change the file, so the two talk by message, and both halves have to be designed together.

How widely used is QuickCraft?

QuickCraft has more than 15,000 downloads on Figma Community.

Can a Figma plugin use AI?

Yes, where the plugin needs it. Across our own products, QuickCraft, TabBud and EaseClip, the OpenAI SDK generates and reworks text, writes scripts and produces summaries; in QuickCraft that means mockup text, generated inside Figma. We integrate the OpenAI, Claude and Gemini SDKs according to what a project requires.

How long does a plugin take?

It depends on the project. Simpler requirements take a few weeks, up to a month; complex builds take months.
